Careers, Training and where to find advice.
A career in the fish processing industry can be rewarding and very worthwhile. The popular perception is one of working long hours in drab conditions; the industry is moving forward. Seafood is popular and sales are growing. Seafood has a very important place in the food chain.
Opportunities exist in the fish processing and manufacturing sector for a career which can progress and be rewarding. Wherever you may be on the educational ladder, or if you currently work in the industry, or are looking for work, there is a route to become successful in the sea food industry.
The industry positively encourages people who are looking for exciting and worthwhile careers within the seafood industry especially from bright, ambitious and capable young people who want to become managers, owners and entrepreneurs of the future.
The industry requires more young people in particular people willing to be trained as filleters and other aspects of seafood manufacturing. It is unfortunate the fish industry is perceived as being a low wage, low skilled industry. We all accept that fish is an integral part of the food industry therefore we should try to raise standards and promote our industry.
The Seafish Industry Authority relocated from Hull to Grimsby in 2008. This has provided the opportunity for training, NPD and collaboration at the heart of the seafood industry.

Individual Training Support Grants are available from Seafish to support trainees in the seafood industry undertaking Seafish approved training courses. Almost all Seafish approved courses are currently eligible for ITSG support. In most instances the Individual Training Support Grant will only cover part of the course costs. Individual trainees should register for the ITSG in advance of undertaking their courses. Registration for ITSGs can be done through an Approved Training Provider (ATP). ITSGs are paid after the course has been delivered and the trainee has been awarded their certificate. General Guidance on ITSGs A draft guide to applying for ITSG support has been produced and this will answer many of the questions about ITSGs.
